Makers’ Hackathon

The International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H) and Pravaha Foundation conducted a ‘Makers’ Hackathon’ for students between the ages of 10-17 years, to raise awareness on ‘Sustainability Through Technology’. The participants used Robotics, IoT, and App Development to design/build solutions to problem statements that revolved around the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - Specifically SDGs #11 Sustainable cities, and SDG #13 Climate action.

Four Phases of Hackathon

The Hackathon was conducted in 4 Phases from Nov 14th 2022 to Jan 29th 2023.

Phase I:

Registration – 14th Nov to 26th Dec, 2022

Phase II:

Phase II: Selection – Dec 31st, 2022, to Jan 9th, 2023

Phase III:

Phase III: Online Interviews – Jan 14th to Jan 15th, 2023

Phase IV:

Phase IV: Finals – Jan 27th to Jan 29th (Offline event at IIIT Hyderabad Campus)

9 teams of students in 2 age categories, 10-13 and 14-17 years, with 3-5 students in each team participated in the final event at IIIT-H.

The finale started with an intensive Boot Camp on the 27th, after which the teams were provided with the Problem Statements at the end of the same day. The teams worked on intensive build sessions through 28th, and completed their models by the 29th afternoon.

Post lunch on the 29th, the teams demonstrated their ideas and models to an eminent 6 member jury panel consisting of professors from III-H and Mahindra University, and renowned environmental experts and educationists. The panel decided on the winning teams and prizes were awarded on the same day.

All the teams rose up to the challenge of the short timelines and tough problem statements, coming up with solutions that impressed the jury panel. Based on the innovative ideas, and the feasibility of the models, 2 of the teams have been picked up for further prototyping and mentoring to help develop their products further. Pravaha is working with its partners to make this a reality.
